DESCRIPTION

The OM3-109 Optical Power Meter is designed to measure optical power in fiber optic communication systems.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The Instrument principle of operation is based on continuous optical emission conversion into electrical current using a photodiode. Then the electrical current is amplified and an analog signal is converted into digital one for its processing and display of the power of the measured optical emission in dB and dBm.

There are universal optical connectors at the Power Meter input which allow to connect various connector types for single- and multi-mode fiber optic lines.

Special Si and InGaAs photodiodes are used as photoreceivers which photosensitive structures are placed on a peltier-effect cooler.

The Optical Power Meter operation is controlled by the front panel buttons (Display and Control Unit). The Power Meter operating modes and the parameters set are displayed on a graphical vacuum luminescent indicator.

The Control Unit (Microcontroller) controls various Power Meter components, processes and corrects measurement results and supports various communication protocols for operation with a PC over external interface buses (GPIB and RS 232). The GPIB indicator with four LEDs provides display of GPIB interface bus operating modes.

The Optical Power Meter comprises the Mainframe and six built-in Units operating at different spectral and dynamic ranges.

The Mainframe houses Power Supply and Control Units.

The standard fiber optic connectors «FC-PC» are mounted the Optical Power Meter input.

The interface bus allows to use the Instrument in systems controlled by a PC.
